Press Release of the English Group Discussion (ERUPSION) on “How Can Youth Optimize Forest Product Utilization in Order to Improve its Sustainability”

ERUPSION  meeting via Webex Online Meeting

Friday, 15th May 2020 – Forestry Education Commission (FenC) of IFSA LC UGM had held the English Group Discussion (ERUPSION) with the theme “How Can Youth Optimize Forest Product Utilization in Order to Improve its Sustainability”. The goals of this event are: (1) increase knowledge IFSA LC UGM’s member about youth role in optimize forest product utilization in order to improve its sustainability, (2) talk about maintaining the forest and forest product (timber and non-timber) sustainability and the impact to the environment, and (3) give knowledge to IFSA LC UGM’s member about forest product utilization steps.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this ERUPSION was held via Webex Online Meeting. The discussion started with a warm welcoming speech from member of the IFSA LC UGM, Zinedine Agustine Damayanti who also became the MC and moderator of this ERUPSION. There was a speaker to discuss the policy. The speaker’s name was Putu Nuansa Putri Savita Uttari or we can call her Esa. She’s a student from the Department of Forest Management, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Firstly, Esa started to explain about kinds of forest product, which consists of two: Timber Forest Product (TFP) and Non-Timber Forest Product (NTPF). In this session, Esa explained Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) has three pillars. The pillars are: (1) Economics, commonly related to commercial activities, (2) Ecology, keep the sustainability of forest, natural function (biodiversity, carbon storage, water resources), and (3) Socio-cultural, related to stakeholders, indigenous and non-indigenous people. Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is important because it can keep the sustainability of forests, reduce illegal logging, and renewable forest products.

Esa explained to achieve SFM, as a youth, there are three ways to do, which are: (1) Learn it first, she said better to know SFM deeply from professionals before taking action, (2) Reduce use of paper as you can, it can be learned through eco-friendly lifestyle, (3) Minimize the use of non-degradable materials because plastic will give serious impact to our forest. Esa explained there is a real implementation in SFM on a global scale like reducing the use of tissue, paper, plastic, etc. which can disturb the environment. Esa also explained that Indonesia’s SFM regarding forest product utilization needs to be improved because is there are many people who still don’t care about SFM.  As a youth, we can reduce plastic bottles with reusable water bottle. So it can start with us.  There was a special message from Esa, “The implementation of SFM will need the awareness from stakeholders (industry or company). A small action will give a significant effect for our forest! Spread it to others and educate them nicely”.
