The Third Day (May 30th 2016)

In the third day, we went to Ashiu Forest Research Station, Kyoto University’s Field Science Education Center. Ashiu Research Forest Station is located in the northeastern boarden part of Kyoto perfecture, ithas a total area about 4160 Ha.

The forest is divided become two, plantation and natural forest. The plantation forest is dominated by Cryptomeri japonica, usually called japanese cedar which is a native species in Kyoto. This wood is utilized to build Japanese house and temple.

Under the tree strings are erected to prevent deer eating the bark of Japanese cedar. The natural forest is in the core of the area, and unfortunately we can not go there because it was rainy and also far.

After the tour in Ashiu Forest Research Station, we continued our activities to Miyama Kayabuki No-Sato. It is a traditional village that is surroundedby forest and rice field that were planted by society there. It has old, traditional houses that were constructed by Japanese cedar wood.

The Fourth Day (May 31th 2016

In the fourth day, we visited Kamigamo Field Science Education and Research Center, University of Kyoto which have five focusses; collection of pines, bamboo flowering period, Satoyama management, seed exchange, and introduction of foreign tree species. We went around Kamigamo and saw their collection of tree, wood, pine seed, and various kind of bamboo. There is a pine tree that has knee root that is caused by high moisture of soil and located near the pool. In this research palce, we also can find nursery of pine with plantation media from sand and rocks.

 

After a long day of tour, we had a very Japanese cuisine; Ramen. We then continued our activities with the explanation of IFSA by Veronica Leung, Regional Representative of Asia Pacific region in our accomodation place. In her presentation, she explained the structure of IFSA, General Assembly, and IFSA’s activities, and also get some messages from Council of IFSA, Jan Joseph Dida, and the other Regional Representative of Asia Pacific Region, Bayu Adhi Nugroho who is also from IFSA LC UGM.

Also in this session, the participant was divided into six groups. Each group had task to discuss about what kind of Social Media that can be used to connect IFSA’s member in Asia Pacific region and also solution to solve the language barrier problems in Asia Pacific region. After discussing it, each group presented their result of discussion to all of participants. After a short break, we discuss about our expectation for IFSA World and also our respective Local Committee, and presented it again.
After finishing the discussion, we rested to charge our energy for the next day’s agenda 🙂
